Are You Born Again?

A NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

By Dr. John N. Chacha

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. JOHN 10:10

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. JOHN 3:16

YOU  MUST BE BORN AGAIN

In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
John 3:3

These words were spoken by Jesus to Nicodemus who was one of the most religious men of his day. (John 3:1-8)  Nicodemus believed in God. He prayed, fasted, tithed, read the  Scriptures and kept the ten commandments. Yet with all these qualifications, Jesus told him he had to be born again in order to enter the Kingdom of God.  No doubt Nicodemus was a religious person who feared God and kept the law, but religion does not save anyone.

Religion is man’s attempt to gain salvation or reach God by his own good works.  However, God’s plan for our salvation begins at the cross of Jesus. The cross represents the plan of salvation. When Jesus Christ hung on the cross, He was judged for every sin in the human race, including yours and mine. He became your substitute. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness . . . ”.
(I Peter 2:24)  Any human being can have an eternal relationship with God by simply accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
(John 1:12)

They (the disciples ) replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
(Acts 16:31)

Despite the fact that God is a loving and a merciful God, the Bible tells us that He is also a just God. This means that all sin is punishable. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Because of His great love for mankind, God in His infinite wisdom made a plan for man’s salvation. He sent His only begotten Son,  Jesus, to die for us.

WHY MUST YOU BE BORN AGAIN TO ENTER GOD'S KINGDOM?

The Bible, which is God’s Word, tells us that all human beings have sinned against God. No one is good enough to qualify to go to heaven. God’s standard is holiness and perfection"  .  .  .for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". (Romans 3:23)

We are sinners because we all inherited the fallen nature of our first parents—Adam and Eve. We do not have to sin to be sinners, for we are automatically born in sin. For example, an orange tree will produce oranges, not bananas.  The only way to change the fruit is by changing the tree. That is what Jesus came to do . . . change our nature. He came to bring to us new hope, a new life, a new beginning. He came to give us peace and happiness now and forever. In Him there is hope in life in spite of  our personal and the world's  problems.  He loves and  cares about us in every way. One day, after this life is over, we will spend eternity with Him in Heaven.

We cannot save ourselves because the Bible says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”  (Ephesians 2:8,9)   God sent the Lord Jesus Christ to come and die in our place so that we may have eternal life. Through His death and the shedding of His blood, He took upon Himself our guilt and our sin.

Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows . . .(Isaiah 53:4)

God wants you to be saved from eternal hell.  He does not want you to perish. His word says in (I Timothy 2:3-4), "This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (II Peter 3:9)

How to BE Saved

  1. Acknowledge the fact that you have sinned against God.

  2. Acknowledge the fact that you cannot save yourself, even by your good works or religious activities. Salvation is not attained by being a member of a religious organization or church. It is not attained by being  baptized or confirmed, or even by obeying the ten commandments. In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. .  .  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. . . You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again..'" (John 3:3,6,7)

  3. Acknowledge the fact that God sent His only begotten Son to die for you so that you can be saved.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:16-18)

  4. By faith, ask Jesus to come into your life. Ask Him to be Lord over your life and then repent of your sin.
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.  As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”  . . . . for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  (Romans 10:9-11,13)
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, will come in and eat with him, and he with me.(Revelation 3:20)

If you want to receive Christ, pray the following prayer:

Jesus, I need to be born again. I need a Savior; I need You. I repent from my sin and turn to You. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead and I ask You now to come into my heart and be the Lord of my life. I receive You now as Lord of my life and I confess with my mouth, Jesus is my Lord. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me.

The moment you believe in your heart upon Jesus and confess Him as you Lord and Saviour, you will be born again. “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”
(John 1:12,13)

After you accept and confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior then you can repent of your sins and believe that He has forgiven you. The Bible says in I John 1:9 that, "If we (believers) confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.'

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. (Romans 5:8-11)

 A New Creation

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!  (II Corinthians 5:17)

After accepting the Lord Jesus, you become a new creation, created after the image of Jesus Christ.
(Colossians 3:10) You now belong in God’s family. The Bible says in Colossians 1:12-14, " . . giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."

In this family of God, you are made free from the kingdom of Satan and his works. You don’t have to be under the bondage of Satan anymore. The word says in John 8:36  that, "if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."   ". . . Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death."
(Romans 8:2)

In this new kingdom of God there is peace, love, joy, happiness, prosperity and blessings. Your sins are forgiven the moment you accept Christ Jesus as your personal Savior. "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace." (Ephesians 1:7)

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.(I John 1:7)

The Assurance of Your Salvation

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (I John 5:11-13)

What to do After You are Saved:
  • Get yourself a good Bible that you can read and understand. Then start reading the New Testament. One of the best books to start with is the Gospel of John.
  • Find a good church that believes in Jesus as the Son of God and the only Saviour for mankind.
  • Fellowship with other Christians. This will help you to grow spiritually.
  • Share with others what Jesus has done in your life.
  • Get water baptized according to the Bible (Matthew 3:13-17; Acts 2:38).
